I was invited to participate again in the Ronald McDonald Charity this past weekend. This was my third year. It was at the Warner Bros. ranch in sunny Burbank. Usually they have atheletes, actors and artist show up and help the kids have a good time.
here is me with my good buddy Winston Pascual
 ever vivacious Richard Haselrig
group shot from L to R top row: Mark Christensen, Tony Cervone, Richard haselrig, Robert Zailo, Frank Andrino, Spike Brandt, lower row: Winston Pascual, Art Leonardi, Jesse Casio These were mostly animators whose work ranged from features like Fern Gully, Iron Giant, to tv like old Pink Panther episodes to the new Duck Dodgers.

ANTHROBLOGIST
I am not an anthropologist, one who studies man. I am an anthroblogist, one who studies man and then complains about him online. So I am at a Lakers game on Sunday. Boy, I hate watching sports. But tickets were free and my girlfriend wanted to go, so. All the way through the game there was some idiot up and slightly behind us who was yelling obnoxiously. He would boo when the opposing team made a shot, and then yell things like "defense" when they had the ball. At what point did he expect the Lakers to stop playing for a second, stroke their chins and say "Oh yeah! Defense! We should do what that guy up in the stands suggests and try to prevent the other team from scoring. Yeah!"
and the evil one himself courtside

I WANT MY S-TV! Even with all our modern technology, our dvd's, and satellite dishes, we still don't have it. We have weather channels, Nepalese stock market channels, cartoon channels, but not it. That's right, I am talking about the John Saxon channel. Nothing but movies from the 70's. All those crappy sci-fi, outer space, we are going to blow up our own world movies. This guy did enough of them to deserve his own channel. Contact your local cable provider today!

Not that anybody really needs to know or probably cares but if you are intersted in seeing some commercials I did the storyboards for go to a.u.f.a. and click on "psa's". I was actually very happy to work on these psa's because this was the first time I had a gig that would be seen all over the country. Mostly I have done local storyboards for local tv ads here in LA. Plus the fact that I felt this was a very worthwhile idea.

I haven't used my blog as a comic review site before. Mostly because there are plenty of sites out there that will give you a weekly dose of what's hot/ what's not. And that's not anything I am interested in doing. However, there is one book I cannot recommend highly enough. Unfortunately this book comes out on a less than a regular basis. I am talking about PLANETARY. This title should appeal to both the literati-neveau comic reader, as well as diehard old school geeks who pine for the days of Lee and Kirby. Beware; Planetary is not a retro book by any means. But it is steeped in the days of classics. What I mean is that the people who say that they are tired of reading rehashings of the same old superhero cliches will love it. This is not exactly a superhero book but it does have superheroes in it. The people who have an affinity for the titles that they could read for decades and have a sense of status quo will pick up on the topics. In the Planetary preview Warren Ellis absolutely strikes a chord while still remaining captivating. Even all the secondary characters besides the antagonist remind you of the secondary characters from the Hulk. John Cassaday is no slouch either. I have been a fan since Desperadoes. Between the two of them they create a book that made me exclaim the first time I read it; "This is the kind of book I want to do!". Every issue Ellis is doing what in old music terms would be a standard. At one time a standard was a song that everybody would cover. A song that you could hear in several different variations with each performer trying to put his or her little twist on it. This is exactly what Ellis is doing. In each story Warren Ellis deconstructs an archetype of pop culture. He breaks it into its elemental structure and then runs in a new direction with it. He has tackled as I said the Hulk, pulp heroes, Hong Kong cinema, Capt. Marvel, Vertigo, Japanese giant monsters, even the first family of Marvel. Do yourself a favor and read it. Just read it.
