ALL HALLOWE'EN

Beware all creatures and beasties and things that go bump in the night
How can Halloween not be an artist's favorite holiday? Out of all other holidays, none bespeak to your creativity like Halloween. Sure, you can find some new ways to decorate for Christmas or Chanukah or even a new way to serve up a Thanksgiving feast. But none of those call upon you to dig deep and find out what is scary. See, it's all mental, pure creative psychology. Sure there are a bunch of stereotypes that you can buy at the store like cobwebs in the corners of a room or a plastic bat in a window. But to get in touch with the real feeling of Halloween you have to actually find out not only what scares you but what scares everyone. Collective memory. Something that resonates back to a time when things that were truly bigger and stranger than man still roamed the earth. That is a lot more than just a plastic pumpkin and some candles.

It's too easy to do scary by the numbers. To be actually scary requires more than relying on old standbys. But they can be fun too. From witches to ghosts. To even some sort of man on a horse that does not have a head (I wish there were any easier way to say that). But you need to remix it and make it unique. So of course a holiday that invokes craftiness as well as creative thinking is going to be my favorite.

Did a mural gig. In a kids room. Oh man, do these kids love the Giants. And apparently I have some more mural work looming. Word of mouth.

Here is a small sampling from my sketchbook. I have also just updated some of the artwork on the website. In particular the inking and comics pages. On the new inking samples are some done over Scott McDaniels, and Patrick Zircher, and Manuel Garcia. I will update more to the comics page as I finish more of the books I am working on.

JEFF vs. JEEF
I was driving back from getting engaged at the beach a week ago (Yay me!! Yay us!!!) when on the freeway I saw a medium sized moving truck. Across the back of the truck was the name of the company. In big block letters it read "JEFF MOVING" and below that a smaller phone number. I thought to myself what a somewhat unexpected name for a moving company. A bit like "Fred's Bank". Not exactly the most confidence inspiring in my opinion. It seemed to conjure up images of a single mover by himself, no helpers and his eponymous truck.

Then I get closer to the truck and realize that it did not say "JEFF MOVING" but in fact said "JEEF MOVING". And that makes a world of difference in that one little letter. I would hire Jeef Moving in a heartbeat over Jeff Anything. Jeff Moving just makes me think that it is some loser stoner who inherited a broken down moving truck from some long-lost uncle and decided that it would be a cool way to score some easy cash.

Jeff. This is the guy who shows up and says that he can "move all of your shit for fifty bucks, dude".

This is who you get with Jeef.
Jeef Moving, on the other hand, you just know that it is going to be some guy from another country and he is going to work twice as hard to get the job done. And he is going to be all business. He will be here at a certain time, load your stuff onto his truck and deliver it to a predetermined place at exactly this time tomorrow for X amount of money. No ifs, ands or buts.
