IT WORKED! IT WORKED!
The phone rang the other night about 7:00 pm. So I knew it would be a sales call. I pick up anyways. Sure enough there is a youngish sounding person on the other end asking me if I would mind taking a very important survey
"Well if it is important then by all means! I would be glad to take your survey."
"Great. Do you consider yourself of Hispanic or Latino descent?"
"Let me just cut you off right there. I am of Antartican descent."
"Antarctican? I have never heard that one before. Let me just put that into the computer."
Then I can hear someone else in the background speaking. Presumably his superior. "Antartican?!? This guy is full of shit just hang up!"
"Thank you sir, this concludes our survey."
Click.
I am hoping that the supervisor doesn't just delete my answer out of the computer. They called me, let them deal with it. Anyway, my answer got me out of having to take some time-wasting and inevitably PC and bureaucratic survey.
Yay!

CRAZY?!? NO, NO. I SAID "LAZY".
Man am I late with this thing.
OK some new rules. I won't be reporting on San Diego with a name drop fest. Nor will I be doing the geek prom photo gallery. Mostly because I didn't seem to quite do as much at SD this year.
Sally and I arrived at out hotel in beautiful Oldtown, San Diego (disclaimer: formerly known as Shantytown. Not a real town.). We got to our hotel and had about an hour's wait for the room to be ready. Since it was lunchtime we hiked up the hill to the restaurant and had a Tecate feuled Mexican repast.
Then it was: get the room, walk down to the train station to get our tickets and ask which train to the convention center. Luckily for us there were plenty of people with con badges also waiting because apparently whatever info the ticket window people had, was way wrong. After forty five minutes of waiting for this phantom train we just followed the trail of nerd pheromones and got on a train that took us to the downtown station in order to transfer to the con train.

the train transfer staion. right out of a sci fi spaceport.

local artist cat in Oldtown.

total wet in wet spray paint style.

the finished product.

action shot of Rafael Navarro miming for change.

what is that , a convention center or somethin'?

and we ride the train back to the hotel.

UNBELIEVABLE.
Mike Weiringo died earlier this week. It apparently came as a shock to all who knew him. I never met him but to say the least I was a fan from afar. I went to his website on a semi-regular basis. He posted sketches on a regular basis. Some of his sketches were more complete and slick than some finished I have seen. And this with a full work load with real deadlines.
That just shows that he was an artist's artist. Someone who loved to draw. And for an artist there are fewer measuring sticks to be measured by.
There is apparently more info from Mike's family regarding services, memorials, etc. at:'Ringo
